What is Life ROI? Since I started this work, I have had many people ask me this question. The words Life and ROI typically do not go together in our society and culture. Conventionally the term ROI is used to define a financial gain or loss of investments. While the financial security and stability are important in the capitalist society we live in, I always felt like it cannot be the only measurement when we think about our lives. That’s why I started looking at what other units of measure we may be able to use to gauge whether we are making the right investments in our lives. The answer I found was something that’s been right in front of my nose. Time is truly a universal unit of measure which equalizes everybody regardless of age, race, education level or socio-economic status. We all have access to 24 hours a day and only 24 hours a day. You can’t buy or trade for more hours in a day. Also, none of know how much in supply we have of this asset as we were born with a birth date but not an expiration date. As the cliché goes, time is the most valuable asset we have. The Life ROI framework utilizes time as the unit of investment to plan, track, and measure how we are investing our most valuable asset towards the success we are striving to achieve. The definition of success varies per individual as it is personal and subjective. The activities we engage in to achieve success also vary. Therefore, the Life ROI framework provides the flexibility and autonomy for each individual to modify and refine per his or her own definition of success in life. Through the research, analysis, strategy, plan, implementation, reflection and refinement phases in the Life ROI framework, we get to approach our lives objectively, strategically, and analytically to achieve what we strive for in life.
